When Does My Water Heater Need to Be Replaced?

Water heaters are designed to last for many years, and while you should schedule maintenance sessions for yours at least once a year, it shouldn’t develop many problems over the course of its lifetime. That can make it hard to determine when it needs to be replaced. Age factors into it, but well-maintained water heaters can last much longer than their warranty indicated. So when does your water heater need to be replaced? Here’s a quick breakdown of signs that you should look for.

1.     Rusty Water

Rusty or discolored water can occur from rust anywhere in the system, but if it appeared throughout your Cedar Falls, IA household – especially when you turn the hot water one – then you’re likely looking at rust in your water heater. That means a breach will likely occur and in any case, the heater is no longer able to provide you with clean water. Schedule a replacement session as soon as possible, and have your anode rod replaced regularly to avoid this issue in the future.

2.     Puddles

A breach in your water tank will be hard to miss, but sometimes, the metal of the tank sides will contract as the water cools and hide the breach. It will leave puddles of water behind, however, which you can spot if you check your heater at the base. Puddles may not necessarily mean a breach, but they do mean trouble that requires a repair session to replace.

3.     Noises

Unusual noises usually represent a problem no matter what they are. In some cases, the problem can be addressed with a repair session. Rumbling or groaning sounds, however, indicate a unit that is in severe distress. You’ll likely need a new heater installed quickly.
