Signs that You Need Drain Cleaning

Water running down the drain - shallow DOFThe drain and sewer system of your home is one of the most important components of the plumbing system. If your drain system isn’t properly maintained, it can cause serious problems for the whole system.

Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to keep your drain system in good shape. All you need to do is ensure that you schedule drain cleaning services in Waterloo, IA with a professional plumber on at least a yearly basis. Keep reading to learn signs that you may need drain cleaning outside of that maintenance appointment.

Slow Drains

Drain clogs are perhaps the single largest plumbing problem you’re likely to deal with when it comes to your drains and sewer line. Clogs usually form over time, as waste accumulates on the drain pipe walls. As this clog grows toward the center of the pipe, it restricts the flow of water.

If you notice that only one drain is draining more slowly than usual, it likely means you’re only dealing with a clog in that single pipe (versus a multiple drain clog which means you probably have a sewer line clog). No matter which scenario it is in your case, your next step should be to call in the pros so we can help before the clog does any more damage.

Foul Odors

This symptom is usually more prevalent with kitchen drains, which have to deal with food waste quite a bit. Other drains can exhibit bad smells too, though. If a foul odor is coming from one of your drains, it may be due to particularly bad waste buildup in that specific pipe.

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that bad smells coming out of multiple drains could very well indicate that you have a problem deeper in your sewer system. Drain cleaning may not be effective for this type of issue, but our plumbers can assess the situation and resolve it no matter what.

Invest in Routine Maintenance

As we alluded to above, even if you don’ t notice any outwardly signs that your drains are in need of cleaning ore repairs, it’s still a good idea to schedule professional drain cleaning services at least once a year. Since drain clogs typically build up over time, preventing drain cleaning will often clean out waste buildup that would eventually have caused pretty big plumbing problems.

Plumbing problems can happen any time—there’s no one season that you’re likely to deal with a clog or some other problem than another, like there is with HVAC systems. So it’s not as important to schedule your plumbing maintenance during a particular time of year, so long as you are having it done each year.

During maintenance, we’ll fully inspect your entire plumbing system, of course alerting you to any clogs that might already be present—but also letting you know if there are any outstanding issues that would benefit from your attention.
