Seeing, Hearing, Smelling, and Experiencing an AC Problem: Dalton’s Tips

Air conditioner issues come in all shapes and forms. For instance, your neighbor might complain about a very specific AC issue that they’re experiencing when you see them for the Fourth of July this year. But it’s actually pretty rare that you experience the same problem with the same source as them. AC units are very different depending on their size, the home they’re installed in, and even the preferences of the owner.

That’s why we think that customers need to be prepared to experience some unique things, like strange noises or foul odors, which can be a sign of a problem on its own. And, if you have the tools to detect these issues by yourself, you can also call our team for AC repair in Cedar Rapids, so the issue can get resolved quickly.

Ready to get started? Keep those eyes, ears, and nostrils peeled for what’s to come!

Using Sight to Detect an Issue

The first and simplest way to detect a problem with your air conditioner is if you see one. Is the system caked in dust? Are components rusty, moldy, or generally looking pretty rough? Even on the outside when examining the casing, you can still get a general sense of how beat up the system is.

Do this for the outside cabinet as well, looking for sticks, pebbles, and residue from powerful storms that might have damaged components. Even just claw marks from your local neighborhood cat can be enough to signal that repairs are required.

Smelling Foul Odors

Air conditioners can also reduce the humidity in your home as a byproduct of the cooling process. But this means they go through a lot of water. Unfortunately, with particularly humid days, this water needs to be ejected from the system, and a clogged condensate drain will lead to mold growth and serious problems.

These issues can be detected with your nose, since mold will smell sour when it comes from the vents. If you start picking up a “dirty sock” smell when your air conditioner is on full blast, you might need to schedule repairs so we can clear the condensate drain and inspect the system for other issues.

Loud or Uncomfortable Sounds

Noises can also signal a big problem that requires professional support. Sounds like buzzing, clanging, banging, shrieking, squealing, and the notorious “buzzing or hissing” sounds will all need professional repairs to treat.

Keep your ears open: any noise that feels loud or uncomfortable is a bad one and requires support.

A Bad Experience

Just because your air conditioner works quietly, doesn’t smell, and looks fine doesn’t mean that it’s in perfect condition. Your energy bills are going to be your biggest clue to figuring out how your air conditioner is working.

If you notice a spike in energy consumption or just a general trend of decreased efficiency, it could be due to a component that’s likely in disrepair or some kind of issue that’s causing longer or more frequent cycles. You might not notice these other than with a quick check of your utility bills, but they’re serious concerns. Make sure you schedule repairs if you notice these issues.
