Duct Care: Tips and Tricks

Air ducts aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the big powerful players of your HVAC system. First, you probably envision your heater or air conditioner, hard at work to keep the temperature comfortable. Then, there’s the thermostat, working diligently to have an easy-to-use interface with immediate control. We could go on, but you get the point.

Not only are air ducts incredibly important for the heating and cooling process, but it’s also one of those components that can completely grind your home comfort to a halt if you’re not careful. If your air ducts aren’t receiving any attention, or at least the bare minimum of input from you or a licensed contractor, then you might be in trouble.

Don’t worry! We’re here to help ease the burden of duct care by giving you some tips and tricks. For duct services in Cedar Rapids, IA, you can count on our professionals as well.

Duct Leaks, Gaps, and Holes

Let’s start with the basics. Any leaks, gaps, or holes in your air ducts are a big problem. We know that they could be closer to an area of your home that doesn’t require a lot of heat in the winter or cooling in the summer, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they’re causing problems.

Duct leaks and gaps mess with the air pressure of your ductwork. Air likes to travel from places of high pressure to areas of low pressure. If the rooms in your home or crawlspaces have slightly lower pressure than the air pressure in your ducts, they’re going to push out of leaks and gaps at record pace, regardless of where the location might be.

And don’t get us started on duct holes and large problems. These can totally ruin your home comfort. It’s important to get your ducts sealed and repaired by professionals when you detect these.

Duct Contaminants

Ducts can get full of nasty contaminants that will likely make your home’s air problematic. Think about breathing in all that dust, the dander from pets, and even allergens and germs that could be recycling through your home’s HVAC system

Efficiency Is Key!

Don’t forget that those contaminants inside of your air ducts are likely messing with your HVAC system’s efficiency most of all! This means you’re actually paying for poor temperature control and contaminants to cycle through your home.

Friendly PSA: don’t use duct tape for air ducts. Contrary to popular belief, the name does not imply that it will work on air ducts. This tape doesn’t do a very good job at sealing things to be airtight, and they dry out very quickly, becoming useless in the process.
