- Refrigerant, to transfer heat from the inside and release it outdoors.
- An indoor coil to absorb heat and cool down.
- A compressor, which adds pressure to the refrigerant in order for it to do its job.
Without each of these components doing their job, all a fan can really do is recycle the warm, stale air that’s present in your living space. A fan doesn’t do anything but move air around. When used in combination with your cooling system, though, that’s all it needs to do.
Ceiling Fans and Your Cooling Costs
So how exactly do ceiling fans help cut down on your cooling costs? Well, they do a better job of evenly distributing air produced by your cooling system than a stagnant vent on a wall can do by itself. Ceiling fans are useful because it spreads out the cool air you’re getting from the AC unit.
This in turn helps your cooling system shut off sooner, which means it’s not working as hard over the course of the summer season, and this is why you’ll see a drop in your utility bills. As we mentioned above, ceiling fans on their own can’t actually cool your home. They make you feel cooler though, because they help sweat to evaporate from your body with ease, which is how we cool off naturally. This is why we feel cooler if we’re standing in front or directly under a fan—not because it’s actually cooling the air.
What Does This Have to Do with Heating?
Given the time of year, we expect that you’re wondering why we’re discussing this now. Well, because your ceiling fan has a switch on it, most often found near the center of the fan where the light fixture is, that changes the direction of the fan blades.
This helps evenly distribute heat using the same principles we mentioned above. When you use your ceiling fans in reverse mode, while using your heater, the heating system doesn’t have to work as hard, making it perform more efficiently, therefore saving you money.
