A UV Air Sanitizer Can Help Your AC This Summer

There are a number of fantastic indoor air quality devices we carry that remove harmful contaminants from circulating through your indoor air. One of the most powerful of these devices is the UV air sanitizer. This system specifically targets organic pollutants such as mold spores, bacteria, viruses, germs, and more.

The ultraviolet rays emitted from the lamps in a UV air sanitizer disrupt the cellular functions of the cells, killing off microorganisms and preventing them from spreading. It does this without even slowing down the airflow through your ventilation system or using harmful chemicals.

How Does It Work?

The UV air sanitizer is installed directly into your HVAC system, and the UV lamps are positioned in a way that their light shines directly onto the evaporator coil of the air conditioner. This is where the cold refrigerant in the AC evaporates and draws heat out of the air, lowering its temperature. But it also draws moisture, most of which drips down into a condensate pan to be drained away.

The moisture that remains is enough to create a dark, moist environment in your ducts that creates the perfect breeding ground for mold. Mold is not just a source of harmful and unhealthy spores. It also insulates the evaporator coil, which makes it harder for this component to absorb heat. Even the thinnest layer of mold will make an air conditioner less energy efficient.

Mold can also damage the coil, leading to repair needs and possibly shortening the lifespan of your air conditioning system. Lastly, mold creates a foul odor that travels through the ventilation system and can be quite unpleasant. However, a UV air sanitizer targets your ductwork and your evaporator coil to effectively prevent the development of mold, giving you healthier air and a more efficiently working system.
