Be Careful What Your Pour Down the Drain This Winter

Your kitchen sink is the sight of a lot of food activity, and with the Super Bowl on its way, you might be using it a lot to prepare food for your guests. Whatever your food-based plans are, however, they would benefit from a little care and foresight as far as what you pour down your drain. The wrong foods or liquids can damage your garbage disposal or clog up your pipes, forcing you to call a plumber when you should be enjoying the game. If you watch what you pour down the drain this winter, you can avoid an awful lot of hassle. Here’s a quick list of some foods you should dispose of in other ways.

  • Bones. Most people know better than to put chicken bones, beef bones, pork bones or the like in their garbage disposal. It can damage the disposal and cause a breakdown very easily.
  • Fruit Pits. Cherry pits, peach pits and similar fruit seeds are just as bad as bones, and again, most people are smart enough to toss them in the garbage instead of down the drain.
  • Fibrous Vegetables. Potato peelings, carrot peelings and celery stalks are a natural byproduct of getting snackable veggies ready for your guests, but when you dump them down the drain, they can get tangled in the blades of the garbage disposal or form clogs in the pipes very easily.
  • Coffee Grounds. Coffee grounds can act like sand when the get in the gears of your garbage disposal. They can also expand when wet and make for a sticky mess to clog up your pipes.
  • Pasta and Rice. Like coffee grounds, pasta a rice expand when wet, and can form a surprisingly strong bond when they get tangled together.
  • Fats, Oils and Grease. These are perhaps the trickiest because most people pour them down the drain as a hot liquid. But they will cool in the pipes and create a clog when they solidify.
