Common Furnace Problems To Be Aware Of

technician-working-on-furnace

It may still be warm enough to use our air conditioners during the day, but the colder days are right around the corner, and soon enough you’ll be running your furnace pretty consistently. So, it’s important to ensure that yours is in great shape. The last thing you need in the middle of winter is a sudden furnace breakdown.

Of course, the best way to prevent furnace problems is with professional maintenance. Maintenance tune-ups allow our technicians to comprehensively inspect, clean, and adjust components that need it, making sure that your furnace works as effectively and efficiently as possible, for as long as possible.

The other way to prevent furnace problems is to understand the following signs of small problems and give us a call for furnace repairs before those small problems turn into catastrophes.

The Airflow from the Vents Seems Weak

When your furnace is operating as it should, you should notice a consistent flow of air coming through the vents. Therefore, if it seems like nothing is happening when you turn your furnace on, then you have a problem! But the problem might be subtle. Perhaps the airflow just seems to be a little weaker than usual. It’s still worth a call to our team.

What is probably happening is that you have a fault blower fan that is struggling to get all the heated air through the ductwork, and therefore you’re noticing weak airflow.

You Feel Lukewarm Air Coming From the Vents

On a mild fall or winter day, it can be easy to brush this off. It’s not that cold outside, so the heater isn’t heating the house up as much.

This is not how furnaces work! The furnace heats the air at the same temperature, all the time. What changes is the temperature of the rooms your furnace is heating up, based on how long the furnace runs. So if you feel lukewarm air coming from the vents instead of the usual warm air that should be coming from it, there’s one of two things probably going on… either you have breached ductwork that is letting some of the cool air from outside in, or you have a problem with the heat exchanger of your furnace.

The latter problem can become a safety hazard, so if you do notice this issue, it’s important that you give our team a call right away.

You Hear Strange Noises

Odd noises can range from clanging, banging, hissing, or even short-cycling–when a furnace turns on and off rapidly instead of going through its normal cycles. Any sound that is out of the ordinary from the usual noises you hear your furnace make as it operates is a reason to give us a call. You can help your household avoid a heater breakdown or even potentially a safety hazard.
