When Do You Need Gas Fireplace Repairs?

Burning natural gas fireplace surround by stoneA gas fireplace is a very effective and efficient way to warm the room you’re in without needing to run your entire whole-home heating system—or it can even supplement that heating system so you don’t have to turn it up as much.

It’s important to remember, however, that if you detect or suspect a problem with your fireplace, then you should call for Cedar Falls, IA gas fireplace repairs right away. But are there any troubleshooting tips you can try on your own? Sure, and we’ll get to that below.

It’s important to understand though, dealing with any gas-powered system can be hazardous, and if you aren’t confident about following any of the advice below, the best thing you can do is contact fireplace professionals who have the right training and experience to deal with this, such as our team! It’s equally important to know what signs indicate that you need fireplace repairs such as when:

The Ignition Fails

Did your gas fireplace fail to ignite? The first thing you should do is close the gas valve, and then check your circuit breaker box. An electric charge is required for your igniter, therefore a tripped circuit breaker can certainly cause this issue. Now you can open the gas valve back up and try again. If this doesn’t do the trick, give us a call!

The Pilot Light Goes Out

Relight your pilot using the instructions within your manufacturer’s guide. This problem might be as simple as a strong draft that blew the pilot light out. Ensure that the vent cap is secure—if it’s loose then it may need to be repaired or replaced. Once all of this has been checked, if you’re still experiencing a problem with the pilot light, then you may have a wiring or thermopile issue, which definitely requires professional attention.

You Detect Strange Odors

Your fireplace does need to be professionally cleaned every now and then, and if you detect foul odors it may be that you are due for a chimney and fireplace cleaning. Do be aware if it smells like burning or gas—in this case immediately shut your fireplace off, vent the house, and evacuate, calling either your utility company or 911, as this can be very dangerous.

You Hear Strange, Unfamiliar Sounds

The only sound coming from your fireplace during operation should be the crackle of the flames. If you hear low rumbling noises, the flame may need to be adjusted. If you detect a roaring sound, your burners need to be cleaned. If you hear grinding or shrieking, then you may have some other mechanical issue going on that requires prompt attention.

Soot Builds Up Excessively

Soot is going to build up naturally during the operation of your gas fireplace. But if you notice the accumulation is excessive, then you may have blockages within your chimney or flue, such as a bird’s nest or some type of rodent. As unpleasant as this is to think about, it’s something that should be addressed right away to prevent further problems.
