What are some signs that you may have a slab leak?
Slab leaks are common problems, but they can be difficult to detect. These problems are often heard before they are seen.
Below are trouble signs to look out for.
- Unusually high water bill: This is usually the first sign of a slab leak. Your monthly water use may be normal, but your bill states otherwise. If the number of people in your home has not increased, and if you don’t have any leaking fixtures, there is a good chance you have a slab leak.
- Hot spots on carpet or flooring: The pipe under the concrete may be leaking if you have hot spots or wet spots on your floor. Warm spots can show up on the flooring from hot water slab leaks.
- Sound of running water: You may have a slab leak if you hear water running in the house even though there is no water being used. Check to see if your water meter has changed. If your meter shows movement but there is no water running, there is a leak somewhere in your home; there is a possibility it might be under the slab. If this is the case, shut off the main valve to your home to stop any more water from flowing inside. The leak could be located between the city meter and the house if the meter is still moving when the main valve is off.
How does this problem happen?
There are four main ways a slab leak can start:
- Construction defect
- Pressure from shifting ground
- Abrasion from long term ground vibration
- Corrosion from chemicals in the soil
