How do humidifiers and dehumidifiers help your home?

If you have never used a dehumidifier or humidifier in your home, then you may feel that your skin is dry in the winter and too moist in the summer. A whole–house humidifier and dehumidifier maintains the level of moisture in your home throughout the year. It can prevent disease by removing or adding moisture as needed, and it can also help prevent damage to your home as well. For example, your home’s drywall could start cracking in the winter if it gets too dry. A humidifier will prevent that from happening.

  • Dehumidifiers: Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air that can cause rust and diseases. An excessive amount of humidity in your home can also weaken your drywall and potentially cause mold in areas where the moisture level is especially high. Installing a dehumidifier will keep you and your family comfortable during the hot summer months.
  • Humidifiers: A humidifier adds moisture where it is needed. One of the reasons people get sick in the winter is because of the dry air in their homes. A humidifier puts moisture back into the air and helps your skin and entire body feel healthier.

There are two main types of humidifiers we install, bypass humidifiers and steam humidifiers.

Is installing one right for you?

If your house has never felt quite as comfortable as you would like it, we recommend giving one of our technicians a call to see if a humidifier or dehumidifier may be what you need.

It could be that your children seem to get sick every winter because of the excessively dry air in your home. In that case, a humidifier can solve your problem.

If the furnace and water heater in your basement seem to rust quickly, or there is condensation on your water pipes, you may need a dehumidifier as well.

We have years of experience evaluating homes for moisture and determining whether or not you need a whole–house humidifier or dehumidifier installed. Give us a call and we will do a complete evaluation on your home and present you with an upfront quote.

About bypass humidifiers

There are several different types of humidifiers, each with their own strengths and benefits. Our team can help you make an educated decision about the right one for your home. One option is the bypass humidifier. This system uses what’s called a bypass duct to get warm air from your furnace to the humidifier without having the humidifier placed on the supply side.

This warm air flows into the bypass duct, and then into the humidifier in order to create excess moisture. Bypass models are generally more affordable to install than other options, but this certainly depends on other factors. We’re happy to discuss your options with you.

The benefits of fan–powered humidifiers

Fan powered humidifiers are typically easier to install since they require no additional ductwork. As the name implies, this model uses a fan to push air through, and doesn’t need to pull that air from the furnace. As such, it’s faster and more efficient at humidifying than other models.

In addition, fan powered humidifiers use less electricity. While this type of system can be costlier to install, when you consider the energy savings and what you’ll be paying month–to–month to operate such a system, it can more than make up for the initial cost of installation over time.

Steam humidifiers are also an option

Steam humidifiers are usually what homeowners are most familiar with. They work by adding humidity to the air by heating water electrically, until it boils in order to create humidity in the form of steam. The steam is picked up by the system blower, and then pushed through your home’s vents—regardless of whether or not your furnace is running.

Steam humidifiers are the most versatile, as you’re able to use them whether you have a functioning HVAC system or not. We do, of course, recommend the whole–house model versus a portable system as this grants you comfort throughout your entire living space. Contact us today to learn more!
