Is a Heat Pump the Right Choice for Your Home?

two-techs-working-on-heat-pump-outdoor-unitThe middle of summer, of course, isn’t the most ideal time to schedule a Waterloo, IA air conditioning installation. But, if your air conditioner broke down completely or has a costly repair need that makes it more economically wise to just replace the system, you may not have a choice.

Even though you may be tempted, we discourage you from rushing into this purchase. Doing so can leave you with a system that’s not properly matched for your home and therefore doesn’t perform as it should. Also, in the last decade there have been many technological advancements in air conditioning, and you may discover you want something completely different than what you’re used to.

For instance, if you haven’t thought of it yet, you’d do well to consider the installation of a heat pump!

“Isn’t a Heat Pump a Heater?”

Yes! It’s a 2-in-1 heating and cooling system. Therefore, if you have a brand new heating system and it’s not showing any signs of trouble, then a heat pump may not be the right choice for you currently. After all, heat pumps are a bit more on the expensive side when it comes to installation, in comparison to other HVAC system types. If you want the best return on investment for a heat pump, it should run in both cooling mode and heating mode.

There are a number of great options for high-efficiency air conditioning systems that will offer you a lot in energy savings, if you should choose to skip the heat pump.

When Heat Pumps Make a Good Investment

So, what are the benefits of such a system?

When it comes to the cooling capabilities of a heat pump, it is very similar to a standard central air conditioning system. It does not “lose” any power due to also working as a heater. In fact, today’s heat pumps work very efficiently as air conditioners, and so long as yours is properly sized and matched up to your living space, you can count on superior cooling at a low monthly cost.

As far as its heating capabilities? Heat pumps are actually a fantastic choice for efficiency. They are electrical systems, which traditionally cost more than gas-powered heaters. However, they only draw on electricity to transfer heat, rather than generating it through electrical resistant. Therefore, you’ll be heating your home more efficiently than you would with a furnace. In fact, you can count on a heat pump to be as much as 4 times more efficient in heating mode than an electric furnace!

Heat pumps overall save homeowners money and space, since they are year-round systems that operate much more efficiently than the average HVAC system. Plus, you can take this system a step further and consider a ductless mini-split, which functions on heat pump technology but eliminates the need for ductwork (which can introduce air quality problems to your living space).
